The Spirit-Empowered Church

Nothing Can Stop the Work of God

April 26, 2026

James was killed. Peter was in chains, execution hours away. The church had no army, no lawyer, no plan. So they prayed. And the angel showed up. As one theologian put it: "The angel fetched Peter out of prison — but it was prayer that fetched the angel." Acts 12 is a chapter about a king who tried to stop the gospel and ended up dead, and a church that had nothing but earnest prayer — and ended up watching God move anyway. Nothing can stop the work of God. Five postures for when you're facing the impossible: When it feels hopeless, pray — not token prayers, but the strenuous, straining, stretching kind that the early church prayed when Peter's life was on the line. When time is running out, trust — Peter was hours from execution and fast asleep, chained between two soldiers. That's not denial. That's trust. When the answer is at your door, believe — the church prayed fervently and still couldn't believe it when Peter knocked. God is gracious enough to answer doubt-filled prayers. When you take God's glory, fear — Herod's final sin wasn't the persecution. It was receiving worship that belonged to God alone. When the word of God increases, multiply — every challenge, every opposition, every Herod. The word still increased. It always does.
